Problem:
Client needs simple, bulletproof method to keep web site up-to-date and consistent with
product line and inventory. Hand coding is a poor option because some products contain
dozens of individual parts, and product line changes frequently.
Solution:
Perl script to generate web site from existing Excel spreadsheet.
As part of day-to-day business, the client already maintains an Excel
spreadsheet with over one hundred worksheets containing customer lists,
inventory, product construction and so on. Using the excellent
Spreadsheet::ParseExcel Perl module it is a relatively simple matter to process
this spreadsheet and generate the site from templates.
The client was so pleased with the outcome and the size of my bill, that I
received a $1,000 bonus. Monetary compensation aside, I am immensely pleased when
a client is so happy with the finished product.
